Do You Have A Lazy Eye? Lazy Eye Surgery May Solve Your Problem!Occasionally a person has vision that is out of alignment, as the extraocular muscles need to be strengthened, weakened, or repositioned via lazy eye surgery. These muscles are what move the eyeball left, right, up and down. Lazy eye surgery is done so as to the tiny muscles of the eyes in order to enable the eyes to move in unison with the other one. These extraocular muscles are attached to the sclera, the outer protective layer of the eyes. The other ends of these muscles are attached to the eye socket in the skull. These muscles are what allow the eyes to work together. Ordinarily both eyes move in "track", or move, together so as to give you a clear picture of what you are looking at. If the eyes are not working in unison, the brain receives two different "pictures" and will either give you double vision or even suppress one of the your brain sees. In effect, you are only seeing with one eye. This form of lazy eye, or Amblyopia, causes more visual loss in the under 40 group than all the injuries and diseases combined in for those who are in the under 40 age group. If this condition is not diagnosed and treated early in life, amblyopia can result in a loss of vision and depth perception. Improvements with eye site are possible at any age with proper treatment, but early diagnosis and treatment are best. Comprehensive vision screenings are needed for infants and pre-school children. An eye exam by a pediatrician or the 20/20 eye chart screening is not adequate for the detection of amblyopia (and other visual conditions). Lazy eye surgery may need to be done on one eye or both eyes and the eye muscles may be tightened or loosened so as to make the eyes align, or track, correctly for a clear 3-dimensional picture. Eye muscle surgery will also benefit you cosmetically. It is difficult talk to someone whose eye is out of alignment. The difficulty is knowing which eye to be looking into while being spoken with. This means that people will often be hesitant about meeting with you. It will not affect relationships with friends or family, but meeting people, first impressions, are often not as easy. Other eye disorder that eye muscle surgery can correct is Nystagmus. This is a condition when one or both eyes move rapidly or oscillate. Duane syndrome is another disorder that can be helped by eye surgery. This condition is when there is little horizontal eye movement. Ordinarily the eye muscles will be loosened so as to relieve the symptoms and allow more movement horizontally. The eye surgery can be done in order to tighten the eye muscles, loosen them or reposition them, although each eye surgery is designed for each patient. Toddlers and children may have this done around the age of two to correct any eye problems that is recognized. Many years ago, placing a patch on one eye and doing exercises, or reading or watching TV to strengthen the muscles in one eye treated a “wandering” eye. Now we have sophisticated surgery that easily corrects these problems in small children. This Is Only Part of the Article Read More
